How do you know when it’s time for a detox?

The mind is so complex. I don’t need to be a psychologist to tell you that! When you have so many negative emotions, feelings, and thoughts know that it’s time to detox. Don’t wait until you have a full plate of negativity. The quicker you become aware, the quicker you can get yourself back on track. Below are some examples to know it’s about time for your mind detox:

  • stress
  • anxiety
  • overwhelm
  • lack of focus
  • lack of sleep
  • unhappiness
  • some health issues
  • etc.

Why do we do this to ourselves?! Lets say NO to all of that nonsense! Instead lets reenergize your life and get you back on track towards your goals and living a happy life.

7 ways to Detox Your Mind

1) Make a “To worry about” list.

When we worry, we think too much because we don’t want to forget something. Instead of letting the thought take up head space in a way that’s not servicing you then write it all down. Easy trick, everyone has a phone on them most of the time so use your notes app to take notes so you no longer worry about certain things. I do this EVERY DAY! Seriously. Throughout my workday coworkers ask me about things in the midst of me doing another task so I make a note of it in my phone so I don’t drop the ball on their needs but also don’t give myself more things to worry about.

2) Spend time in Mother Nature.

There is just something about being outside in mother nature. Unplug! (No technology) Research shows that there are health and wellness benefits of simply spending time in nature. Use it as a time to gain clarity and just relax. Sometimes you just need it to get a better perspective on important things in your life.

Cycle through your human senses. Please not all 5 of them. Don’t go eating dirt! 🀣 Unless you’re into that? No judgement here. What I mean is, take off your shoes and feel the grass or sand between your toes. Listen to the waves of the ocean or the rustling leaves on the trees. Look and observe all the colors, shapes, and everything around you. Smell the salt coming off the waves of the sea or smell the fresh air from the mountain top. Doing these things with intension ALWAYS brings me to a place of calmness and mind detox.

3) Meditate.

Meditation has changed my life! The intension is to focus on one thing at a time. This helps when outside of meditation to then learn to only focus on one thing at a time. Contrary to popular belief, multitasking is not productive.

Ultimately, this trains your mind to make any distracting or unhelpful thoughts that enter it less important so you can focus on what needs your attention now!

Don’t know how to meditate? Spotify has a ton of guided meditations to make things much easier for you. I’ve linked one specific for stress DETOX. If you’re not into that specific one, look for ones that work best for you! I’ve created a small playlist of guided meditations that I like.

4) Delete people from social media.

Let go of things that don’t serve YOU! Declutter. This includes social media. If you’re following someone that triggers negative emotions or negative self-talk then unfollow or delete them. It’s that simple. I’ve deleted a family member from social media because they always had something negative to post about. It can be uncomfortable but hey, if you chat with the person about why you deleted them and they don’t understand or they get mad, that’s on them. Not you. But this can be less personal. Unfollow news pages that you don’t particularly care for anymore or a fitness influencer that makes you feel like crap. (I want to note that you’re a boss babe so don’t let anyone make you feel less or unworthy!) This can flow into many other topics so I’ll stop while I’m still on track. 🀭

Anyway, if you’re going to spend time on social media make it a positive and productive experience. Question if the people or pages you’re scrolling through actively adds to making your life better. Be selfish! πŸ˜‰

5) Take a day to yourself.

Sometimes we just need that day to spoil ourselves and get that self-care glow-up! I’ve made a Pinterest board to give you some ideas on what you can do to fill your cup.

I’m a single female that lives alone so it can be easier for me to do this. But those of you that might have a significant other and/or children might find this harder to do. My suggestion, schedule an appointment each week or a few days a month for you time. I’m not so naΓ―ve to not understand that it’s more complicated than that but it doesn’t have to be. Hold yourself accountable to it just like you would for a doctors appointment. What’s the worse thing that will happen? Spending time alone can help you refocus on your goals and desires. Or a time to just not think at all! My personal favorite!

6) Don’t be a yes person.

Be selectively social. It’s important to be mindful of who you spend your time with. A lot of negativity and self-worth issues can stem from who you surround yourself with. Remember, negative energy attracts more negative energy. It’s contagious!

Don’t be a people pleaser! Saying YES to something you really didn’t want to go to is only hurting you. I’m so guilty of this. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Why why why is it so hard to say NO!? No one has enough time to do everything and stay stress free. Do your best to prioritize what is more important to you while keeping your mind as stress and clutter free as possible.

Now don’t go stressing over the fact you decided to say NO. That will defeat the whole purpose. Own your NO and move on!

7) Protect your mental space

It’s about protecting YOU! Stop letting people and things grab your attention that don’t deserve it. If you have a friend that loves to gossip ALL THE TIME then ask to change the subject or topic. If it doesn’t work then maybe have a real conversation with the friend to help her/him understand why? Confrontation sucks! I really don’t enjoy it but it may be necessary to help friends understand your reasoning. If they don’t or reject your reasoning, then GIIRRLLL they are not a good friend. Buh-byeee! It’s normal to grow apart from people. This life is too precious (and fun) to waste on crappy people. I’ll be your friend. 😊 (In no way am I saying I’m any better than other people. Just light heartedness. I’m human too!)

Another way can be watching the news or scrolling through social media. If you’re spending three hours watching or looking at something that is just stressing you out then… TURN. IT. OFF! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Why put yourself through the misery? I personally made the choice to not have a T.V. (that might be extreme for some) but it gives me less distraction and more time to do other things. So find your happy medium without negatively and stick with it. Protect yourself.

Remember the Big Picture

Take a look back at your personal or family goals. It’s too easy to get distracted with day-to-day life and forget all about your why. One thing I do is write my monthly goals on my fridge calendar. As often as I go to my fridge, I am able to view my goals many times throughout the day!🀭 If the fridge is one of your unhealthy triggers then maybe try posting them on the back side of your front door or on your bathroom mirror. Do what works best for you. Remember why, get yourself inspired again and get back to taking action to meet your goals.

Most importantly, FORGIVE YOURSELF! We are human. Humans make mistakes. Don’t stress and worry over something in the past. Learn from it and MOVE ON smartly and positively. Trust yourself and trust the Universe.

Take the time to fill up your cup first. You’re a disservice to everyone around you when you push your need to the side.
